Health card service simplified
for residents of rural Ontario

Since the introduction of expiry dates for Ontario Health Cards in 1995, rural residents have been compelled to travel to a nearby city, or book appointments at travelling clinics in order to renew this vital document.

That’s changing fast as the provincial government opens new ServiceOntario centres to provide routine health card services in conjunction with motor vehicle licensing offices. The program means nearly 95 per cent of all Ontarians will soon be within 10 kilometres of an integrated ServiceOntario centre.

“ServiceOntario is integrating services, to make things faster and easier for people in rural Ontario to get the government services they need,” stated Revenue Minister John Wilkinson, MPP for Perth Wellington at the office launch of the ServiceOntario Centre in Harriston, June 25.

Local residents will now only need to make one trip for most health card and driver and vehicle registration services. These changes are aimed at giving people access to more routine government services and better meet customer needs, especially in rural and northern communities.

“We are thrilled to provide this new added health card renewal service,” said Minto Mayor David Anderson, who has provided vehicle licensing services for the past 28 years and now operates the ServiceOntario Centre at 36 Elora Street in Harriston. “Our residents appreciate being able to renew their health cards as well as their drivers licences in one location.

Earlier this spring, a ServiceOntario location was opened in Arthur, providing integrated service to residents of that area.

“Ontarians will benefit from a one-stop shopping experience for most health card and driver’s licence services at all of our ServiceOntario centres by the end of this year,” stated Harinder S. Takhar, Minister of Government Services.
